Founded: March, 2015
In March 2015, Hempstory opened its doors in the centre of Amsterdam. It’s a refreshingly sophisticated yet cosy shop and café on Oudezijds Achterburgwal that stocks a special assortment of lifestyle products based on, or inspired by, hemp. None of the mass-produced cannabis/hemp gimmicks found at tacky souvenir stores around Amsterdam here! But if you’re looking for an authentic hemp experience that’s rooted in beauty as well as practicality, you won’t be disappointed.
The purpose of Hempstory is that people who have no interest in cannabis at all can learn about hemp in a very positive way. Marijn Blauw (one of Hempstory’s founders) said: “We have really wonderful products and we want to make a contribution to acceptance. It’s fun to see that some people only realise what the store’s concept is once they’ve looked at some five or six products.”
Hempstory is the first concept store in Amsterdam to tell the fascinating story of hemp, and does so in an artistic and modern way. There’s lots to learn, see, and of course, to buy.
The Hempstory assortment consists of lots beauty and nutritional products, clothing, accessories, and home furnishings. Hemp is often the main, and sometimes even the only, raw material used for every item on the Hempstory shelf. The addition of the mini cafe, where delicious coffee, tea and home-made hemp delicacies are served, means that Hempstory has something for all the senses. And that’s not all. Sustainability, organic production and fair trade are all key values of Hempstory.
The Hempstory manifesto
Hempstory was founded by Linda Linquist and Marijn Blaauw, and at Hempstory’s inception, sustainability and education were at the forefront. Both women have a background in eco-friendly and healthy living, and the future of hemp solutions in Europe. While Marijn Blaauw’s family owned and operated a health food store, Linda Linquist was on the team of people helping to found and develop HempFlax.
Needless to say, both women came together with the purpose of hemp integrity. And that’s the manifesto that Hempstory successfully brings to the public.
There are just a few spots around Amsterdam that are dedicated to hemp rather than cannabis. The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum is another one. Overall, the hemp niche isn’t as popular as the cannabis niche in the Netherlands and Amsterdam, which is what makes Hempstory so unique and exciting.
What can you check out in store?
Hempstory is cool for a few reasons — aside from being able to get your hands on some beautiful, artisanal hemp products, you can also just stop by for a tea or coffee. While you’re waiting you can browse Hempstory’s beautiful range of hemp-based items.
You’ll find many of Sensi Seeds’ CBD products, which are of course hemp-derived. There is an extensive range of hemp cosmetics too, including many items from Hempz and Dr Bronner. Hemp textiles are also a big part of store, and visitors will find a range of bags, purses, and clothing instore. Finally, hemp foods can be purchased (such as shelled hemp seeds and hempseed oil), or customers can order a delicious edible or drinkable hemp treat.
For the homespun home decorators, there are beautiful botanical prints of cannabis and hemp, coffee table books, and colouring books.
Everything about the store screams hemp, and the people who work at Hempstory are always proud to share information about the plant and its history. Walking into Hempstory isn’t just about collecting an item — it’s a unique, Amsterdam hemp experience.
